Review

"It takes a unique person to get access to the brightest minds in hockey; it takes someone special to get them to open up; and it takes an extraordinary individual to bring all of that together in what will be this season's must-read hockey book. Craig Custance is that guy."- BOB MCKENZIE, TSN Hockey Insider"These are the great games that I remember watching and covering. You're always thinking, 'Why did the coach do that? What was he looking for there?' Now we know the answers."- ELLIOTTE FRIEDMAN, Sportsnet"Craig Custance is a modern journalist with an old-school storytelling style. What he gives you on every page is insightful perspective and entertaining prose."- KEVIN ALLEN, USA Today"NHL coaches know so much and usually say so little, but Craig Custance cracks them open and finds all kinds of insight, humor and honesty through the biggest moments of their careers. You get to relive the games, and see them through fresh eyes. I love this book."- BRUCE ARTHUR, Toronto Star"The idea of sitting down with all these respected coaches and watching great games together is an unbelievable concept. The execution from Craig Custance is top notch. Hockey fans will love this book but if you're coaching sports at any level, it should be required reading."- MIKE VALLEY, NHL goalie coach From Stanley Cup of Chowder:"The beauty in this book is that the coaches interviewed had a chance to drop their guard in a way most fans or even writers are usually privy to. There's a unique value in getting to hear a coaches real thoughts, far enough after the fact that they aren't worried about the next series, or guarding their words so as not to upset their opponent. To no ones surprise, Custance goes out of his way to interview and talk with various friends, former players and peers of each coach, in an effort to give a holistic view of who they are, not just as head coaches but as people."From Raw Charge: "Custance included enough behind-the-scenes stories (let's face it everyone loves stories) that the casual hockey fan will thoroughly enjoy reading the book. Who doesn't want to know which player Ron Wilson refers to as "impossible to talk to" (take a guess), or what Joel Quenneville did for Pavol Demitra that cost his owners a sizable chunk of money? Not only was it a fantastic look into the minds of hockey coaches, Custance included personal moments that it's clear a memoir devoted entirely to his experiences as an NHL writer would be entertaining as well. From last-minute downloads to forgotten digital recorders and temperamental RVs, he showed that life on the road wasn't exactly as glamorous as readers might think. Should a hockey fan buy this book? Yes. Undoubtedly."From the Boston Globe: 'Behind the Bench' is a good reminder that there is no NHL coaching template"Custance used game film with each coach as the entry point to initiate feedback, analysis, and reflection. Custance watched Game 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Final with Julien at Warrior Ice Arena in his final season as Bruins coach. With Sullivan, Custance reviewed Game 6 of the 2016 Final, the first of two Cups the Marshfield native has won.In every case, the film served as the station from which the conversation pulled away, regularly rumbling down different tracks. Custance watched the same game with Babcock and Wilson: the 2010 Olympic gold medal match. Wilson, the American coach, repeatedly jabbed Phil Kessel, who also played for him in Toronto. Babcock, Canada's boss, reviewed the game and scribbled notes to use for his upcoming training camp in Toronto. It is a good reminder that there is no NHL coaching template. These men may seem like they've come off the factory line with X's and O's in their heads and frowns on their faces. In reality, they are human."

Behind the Bench has quickly become one of the best hockey books I've read. It's a smooth read, the storytelling is top notch, the insight is terrific and the way Craig gets these coaches to open up in a way you don't often see them do publicly (both personality wise and X's and O's wise) is phenomenal. I actually found myself sifting through these signature games while following along in the book, and it felt like I was in the film room with them. Each chapter seemingly gets better than the previous one, with all 10 coaches providing a different/unique perspective. Highly recommend to every hockey fan.

I love hockey and write for a hockey website. I have also followed Craig Custance for several years and try to read or listen to everything he puts out. When I heard he wrote this book, I had to read it. It is one of the best hockey books I've ever read. Every chapter is slightly different so there is no redundancy. The best part is that the book has something for non-hockey fans as well. This is especially true of the Mike Babcock chapter which is filled with leadership thoughts that anyone can find useful.

This is a great read. With inside access to 10 of the most successful coaches in the game, you'll pick up some lessons on tactics, funny stories about team pranks, and plenty of the emotion and insight that comes from players and coaches who have reached the pinnacle of their sport. But what I found most interesting about this book were the insights on how to motivate people, manage organizations, and treat others with respect that are applicable to business, family, and personal relationships in any context. Drop the Org Management & Leadership course in your MBA and read this instead.

Great insights and perspective on some of the best games in recent history. The insights on various leadership styles and thought processes are great outside of the hockey realm and even better for the big hockey fan. I enjoyed how the story weaved through the adventure of how all the interviews were captured and each coaches personality. I thought of all the other coaches that I would've loved to hear from and didn't want it to end.

Start with the hook, which is talking to some contemporary hockey coaches about important moments in the game, and then add in fun with technology, moments of doubt, family time and buying an RV, and your only halfway to covering the map that Craig Custance navigates in this gem of a book. (And he does it with fewer words packed into my opening sentence.) Craig leaves you with a better understanding of the coaches he interviews, and you get more layers of the writer that Craig has become. I followed him for behind the paywall of The Sporting News to ESPN the Website and now The Athletic and The Full 60 podcast. Consider this book part of that excellent journey.

Craig is able to share a very personal moment with some of the best coaches in the league which in turn provides a more personal look at how these coaches think and view the game, the world, life in general. It's not X's and O's, it's about the memories of their proudest achievements and how they got there. This book is excellent and essential for any adult involved with athletics to remember the human side of coaching and dealing with players.

This is a great read. Craig lays out a simple idea, "tell the story of watching great games with great coaches," and then does so in a beautifully layered way that tells you so much more than just how the coach prepared his team for said game. You come away from this book having relived a hugely significant hockey game, understanding more about how each coach coaches, and who each coach is at his core. The way this book digs into ideas not just about hockey but also leadership, team building and motivation is fascinating.Loved it.

While I bought the book because I am a hockey fan, I truly enjoyed the book for non-hockey reasons. Craig does a great job letting us see the true personality of the coaches and what makes them great. So I recommend for hockey fans but also a good read for people who want to learn more about coaching and leading teams.
