Review

"Queer Magic asks us to unlearn what we've thought about the global past and instead substitutes an inclusive, more accurate world history, where queer identities are plenty."―ForeWord Reviews "Tomás Prower takes us on a global journey, a quest to find queer magick across the world. Our stories are not confined to any one place, time, or religion, and this book is truly a diverse guide to understanding our often lost and forgotten myth and history. Certain to inspire LGBTQ+ magickal practitioners for years to come!"―Christopher Penczak, Gay Witchcraft "In his latest work, Queer Magic, Tomás Prower takes us on a journey that spans both time and continents to examine the myths, magic, and spiritual lives of those who exist outside the culturally sanctioned heterosexual binary. Surprisingly detailed, Prower examines not only the practices of pre-modern native cultures, but also the effects of Christian colonialism and its devastating and history-robbing effects upon them. He demonstrates how those cultures' near-universal acceptance of queer sexual expression has been usurped, and he shines a light on how those traditions have found ways to survive―and even thrive―in spite of being the victims of revisionist history. With interesting bits of history and lore (I may never think of Dracula quite the same way again) combined with practical exercises to help us view sexual expression and gender outside of our common modern restrictions, this book should be considered essential reading for all LGBT+ practitioners of magic and spirituality. Highly recommended."―Storm Faerywolf, author of Betwixt and Between "More often than not, people whose sexual identities, gender identities, social roles, affectional preferences, relationship styles, and so on are in the minority and tend to be erased or misrepresented in our culture. Queer Magic is a journey around the world and through the centuries to uncover some of these hidden stories. This book is not only history and mythology, it also contains vignettes, experiences, and practices from modern people from diverse backgrounds. One book cannot address everyone and everything, but Queer Magic is a heartfelt effort that will encourage you to continue the work of discovering these treasures of the spirit."―Ivo Dominguez Jr., author of The Keys to Perception

This book is a journey through time and across lands, looking not only at queer figures in mythology and magic, but the people that revered/revere them. Prower invites you to know them, to do magic with them, to step out of your comfort zone and own your queer identity. If you're looking for in depth commentary on queer gods, this isn't the right book, but if you're looking for your tribe, this is definitely one to check out. Queer Magic is really an invitation to dive deeper into these traditions and find what works for you, the individual. Most of all, though, its a reminder that you're not alone, and you never have been.

Two great challenge are queer spirituality and magick are reclaiming our myths and history that have been erased or "sanitized" and forging new myths and spiritual lore for the future. Tomás Prower's book serves both of these goals with an around-the-world look at queer spirituality and culture in both the past and the present, offering us insight and resources for the future.

This was a very entertaining read! Prower's casual tone and flow makes it intriguing. This book truly opens up your mind, and further proves that gray areas in life have always exited.

Incredible book so insightful and useful! It's been so valuable to me as a queer witch. I would definitely recommended it to anyone interested in queer spirituality.

Highly recommend! Easy to read and understand and informative.

I thoroughly enjoyed Prower's Queer Magic. The book wasn't quite what I expected, as the title may have led me to think that this would be more instructional--something geared towards a magical practice for queer people. Instead, it was centred on queer myth, history, and folklore. Somehow this ended up being more powerful than I would have imagined. This book surveys the role of the LGBTQ+ community throughout time around the world, with a special emphasis on the spiritual roles that our community has played. Definitely worth a read for all queer people, especially those struggling to find acceptance among their spiritual communities.

This is a wonderful little book. Queer Magic gives an interesting, easy-to-read survey of sex- and gender-variant myths, gods, and folk stories from around the world. The author writes in a breezy conversational style and nicely summarizes complex points of Theology and comparative religions with just enough background to make the LGBT content make sense.Tomas Prower, himself a practitioner of modern day Wicca, generally doesn't "explain" the meaning of the various myths and stories, but instead suggests rituals and magical practices that exemplify the point of the stories. But the reader doesn't have to be a magus to understand the lessons he is extracting from the stories. "Magic" and "witchcraft" aren't so much about supernatural powers (this isn't Harry Potter), but about meditation, spiritual practice, and focus of attention.Prower's interpreting through suggested rituals reveals an important quality of gay/queer consciousness—that we tend to see from outside and over and above so many of the assumptions and taken-for-granted realities of mainstream culture. As so many of the characters from past and/or foreign cultures demonstrate, there is power and perspective that goes with being a sex/gender outsider. Because of our anomalous sexual/gender consciousness, we can sometimes see through what other people just accept as real because somebody told them so. We have to--and get to--reexamine everything. If those people who told you so about sex and homosexuality could be so wrong about these, they are likely wrong about other things. This perspective is one of the great gifts of gay/lesbian/ queer consciousness. And such a perspective is what is demanded in world in which there are many gods and many theologies and many spiritual practices. If all gods are real, then no gods are really real, and all are "fingers pointing at the moon."The way to achieve this queer "enlightenment" is to read and learn about other religions and other cultures. Simply the exposure to other ways of thinking forces open your mind and raises your perspective. This book is a wonderful help in achieving the higher perspective.Reviewed by Toby Johnson, author of Gay Spirituality: Gay Identity and the Transformation of Human Consciousness and other books and novels.
